  • The service scans all e-mail messages sent to and from the accounts with postman for viruses.
  • If an e-mail message infected by a virus is sent for an account with postman from a non-RIKEN network, the service detects the virus and quarantines the e-mail message. At the same time, postman sends an alert mail to the recipient of the message.

What happens if an e-mail message infected by a virus is sent to me?

The message is quarantined by postman. In addition,

  • If the message was sent from a non-RIKEN network:
→ The system sends an alert mail to you but not to the sender.
  • If the message was sent from a RIKEN network:
→ The system sends an alert mail to you and to the sender.

I got an alert mail that says “Virus found in received message …”.

The message indicates that an e-mail sent to you was a virus mail and was quarantined by postman.

Current system is not able to delete or isolate a virus and then deliver the content of the message. The system sends just a notice to inform you of the fact that a virus was detected in a message sent to you.

The following is an example of the notice. If you have no idea about a sender or a title of the message, just ignore it.

The example of an alert mail:

What should I do to use the virus scan service?

All you need to do is to set SMTP server as “postman.riken.jp”.

Anti-virus software

Will anti-virus software installed on my computer
and the postman virus scan service cause a race condition?

No. the postman virus scan service scans only e-mail messages transmitting on postman.

So, it does not cause a race condition with anti-virus software running on your computer.

Security of your computer will be enhanced by protecting both at postman and at your computer.

Does the postman virus scan service replace my anti-virus software?

No. This system is designed to be a supplement tool to your anti-virus software, because this system scans only e-mail traffic.
